Rhythm Game Level Design

I’ve spent 10 years creating charts across rhythm games with different control schemes, including osu!standard, osu!catch, 4k/6k VSRGs, and WACCA Plus. My work explores unusual gameplay ideas while keeping musical expression, readability, and player enjoyment at its core.

NULCTRL EX - osu!catch

A technical chart created for a contest with a rule that notes can only be either big or small. I chose large notes, and the chart was well received for its technical gameplay and distinctive use of wide stacks, winning the contest and numerous awards.

osu!catch controls:

Left and right keys moves the catcher. Press and hold the left Shift key to activate a dash state. Moving while in the dash state is twice as fast.
Hyperfruits are special kinds of fruits that will appear when the next fruit is too far away for it to be possible to catch it with a dash. Collecting a hyperfruit will upgrade the catcher's dash into a hyperdash, which allows the platter to move just fast enough to catch the next fruit.

Ignition - WACCA Plus

A silly anti-meta tech chart designed around a unique idea of four converging holds, with many other concepts requiring slow and methodical play.

Wacca Plus is a fan-mod that's aims to closely follow the game's original vision, and is used by almost all privately owned Wacca cabs.

forest of the spirits - osu!mania

The song’s sparse rhythm leaves room for cross-hand patterns that keep the gameplay engaging without adding more notes. Repeated patterns give players opportunities to learn the movements and anticipate them as they return.

Remix 10 - osu!standard

Inspired by Rhythm Heaven, this chart innovated a three-input gameplay through visually identical sliders requiring different actions. Players most follow the audio cues to anticipate what they need to do.

Chart Review & Collaboration

For three years, I served as an osu! Beatmap Nominator across standard, catch, and mania. I reviewed around 1000 charts, and approved around 200 mapsets for ranked. A typical chart review takes 45-100 minutes.

I worked with creators through multiple rounds of feedback, discussing gameplay issues and reviewing revisions. This experience developed my ability to explain design concerns clearly and consider different approaches to the same piece of music.
